I have decided to lose weight with diet and exercise.I am generally active. We are planning to start trying later this year but my weight is a concern.I am healthy other than that. I do have arthritis in my lower spine but I still do everything normally. That is a concern also can I safely have epideral if needed? I have a lot of general questions because I am excitedly nervous.
AnswerDear Jessica,
This is a great question! You are right to start planning ahead. You probably will not have problems with conception (unless you are experiencing irregular periods) due to extra-weight. However, pregnancy is associated with some physical discomfort as your body is changing to accommodate the baby. It will be wise to reduce the amount of body fat before getting pregnant. It sounds like you still have a few months. I would recommend that you talk to a nutritionist about your food intake. If this is not possible you can try working on your own using a website that provides good guidelines. I recommend www.myfooddiary.com. My clients are usually happy with it. I also would advise you to find a certified personal trainer in your area (ACE or ACSM certification) with specialty in weight loss. Since you have arthritis you have to be careful about your choice of exercise. A professional trainer can prescribe you a safe and efficient cardiovascular and resistance program. Make sure you mention your plan to get pregnant to the trainer and the nutritionist. You don't have to go to a gym to lose weight; your trainer can create a program that includes walking, lifting free weights or using video materials at home. If you want to check with me about setting goals with a trainer please feel free to write me again. All the best and good luck! I think you will be an awesome mom!
Happy New Year!
