Dental Work & Potential Pregnancy: What Are the Risks?

Question
Hi, I'm in a situation where I have an impacted wisdom tooth which needs to be extracted asap. At the same time, there is a small possibility of pregnancy. My period is not due for another 6-7 days so it's too early to tell at this point. Would it be safe to have this sort of dental work done, considering that it would require the use of some anesthetics and drugs?

Answer
Dear Ann,

Generally, dental surgery - or any surgery - is preferably done in the 2nd trimester if it must be done during pregnancy. However, it sounds like yours may not be able to be put off. Many dental procedures require anesthesia, which usually can be done without great cause for concern. Local anesthetics are relatively safe and are preferred over IV or inhaled agents (which may increase the risk of miscarriage in the 1st trimester). Novocaine and lidocaine can be used. Although the addition of epinephrine to local anesthetics (to make them last longer) is usually considered safe in pregnancy, women who are given this drug run a slightly higher risk of some minor birth defects, so it's best avoided if at all possible. If your dentist thinks your care requires the use of epinephrine, have him/her check with your OB doctor first.

Pain medications such as Tylenol can be given safely in pregnancy. If narcotics are necessary, some can be given for a short time relatively safely. Your dentist should be familiar with those that are considered safest during pregnancy or can consult with your OB doctor. The same is true for antibiotics.

If it were me, I would actually want to have the procedure done as soon as possible. At this point, you don't even know that you have conceived. And if you have, implantation has barely occurred. No major formation or development of any internal organs or major body systems is going on with a fetus right now. But again, consult with your dentist and OB/GYN for further information and peace of mind if necessary.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
