Pregnancy Risk After Unprotected Sex: A Medical Perspective

Hi expert Brenda,

I'm really paranoid right now because I don't know if my girl friend is pregnant. Due to my stupidity I forgot I'm not wearing a condom and was too late before I realized that (I already ejaculated inside of her). Well she has a monthly menstrual cycle of about 35 days (+/- 2 days). She has 7 days of bleeding and we had sex just after the day her menstruation stopped (8th day). Is there a high chance of her getting pregnant? please advise. I really really need ur help. THanks

Dear Drex,

Although you are susceptible to conceive a pregnancy ANY time you have unprotected sex, the day after period bleeding ends would not necessarily be considered one of the most fertile days of the cycle. If her cycles are approximately 35 days long, we would not expect her to ovulate until around cycle day 20. So, CD 8 would be far enough away from CD 20 that she/you should be safe. Again, not completely impossible - but chances are low.
