CMV & Toxoplasmosis in Pregnancy: Understanding Your Results

Question
Salam aleykum, i have a question about CMV and toxoplasmosis. I live in Egypt now but I am not Egyptian so my doctor cant explain this to me.
I became pregnant for the first time last June and my doctor ordered a blood test in early pregnancy (about 5+ weeks).

July 2007
My CMV results were:

IgG: 232 IU/ml (Normal: 0-15 IU/ml)
IgM: 0.45 index (Normal: 0-0.4 index)

Toxoplasmosis:
IgG: 16.2 IU/ml (Normal: 0-3 IU/ml)
IgM: 0.18 index (Normal: Up to 0.5 index)

The Doctor was very concerned with these high levels and I ended up with a miscarriage at 6weeks.

Now about, 11 months after that i became pregnant again and had the same test done at 5 weeks.

April 2008

CMV:
IgG: 187 IU/ml
IgM: 0.60 Index

Toxoplasmosis:
IgG: 9.2 IU/ml
IgM: 0.30 index

And again she was very concerned. She prescribed to me a lot of medicine but I had an early m/c again.
Can you please explain me what does these numbers mean exactly...my doctor is telling me that this is new infection, but how can it be new, if i had it already during my first pregnancy? Is it a primary infection and shouldn't i already have antibody's for it? If I get pregnant again inchallah, will these CMV and Toxoplasmosis be a problem again, can it still effect my baby?

Thank You!

Answer
Dear Sarah

The decline in titer of toxoplasma and CMV is great in April 2008 and shows a marked improvement. These infections do a lot of harm to pregnancy when they are acute, with similar titers to the titers u had earlier, especially during pregnancy. After treatment, titers decline and mostly remain so for life. I advise a repeat course of Rovamycin for 3 weeks before attempting new pregnancy just as a safety precaution. There is no need for more drugs. This drug is specific for toxoplasma.

Good Luck
