Lovenox vs. Heparin During Pregnancy: A Guide for High-Risk Patients
QuestionHi I'm 36 y/o and I've had 2 miscarriages in the last year. I have 2 wonderful children ages 9 and 7. The last 2 miscarriages I was on Lovenox. The reason for Lovenox is I've had 2 blod clots in my brain and suffered 2 strokes. However, I've recovered fairly well. The pregnancies were planned. I have been talking with 2 other High-Risk OB doctors to find out what I should do because we are trying again. My original doctor told me that Heparin wasn't used during pregnancy because it crossed the placenta? That's the reason for Lovenox as their choice. I haven't had any success with Lovenox. I guess my questions are. (1) What affects does Lovenox have on the fetus? (2) What's the success rate of a continued pregnancy with Heparin or which in your expert opinion is better?
Please Help.
AnswerYou can safely use either Heparin or Lovenox during pregnancy. You cannot use Coumadin during pregnancy. If you have had embolic problems in your brain, you MUST use some kind of anticoagulant such as Heparin or Lovenox during the pregnancy. Heparin DOES NOT cross the placenta and can be safely used throughout the pregnancy (as can Lovenox);.
