Understanding Pre-Cum: What is it and Does it Contain Sperm?

Question
QUESTION: If pre-cum comes from the Cowper's Gland then how is there sperm in pre-cum?

ANSWER: Hi Trina,

During sexual arousal each gland produces pre-ejaculate. This fluid helps to lubricate the urethra for sperm to pass through, it neutralizes traces of acidic urine in urethra, and helps flush out any residual urine or foreign matter. It is possible for this fluid to pick up sperm, remaining in the urethral bulb from previous ejaculations, and carry them out prior to the next ejaculation.

QUESTION: How long does sperm live in a womans body to get her pregnant?

Answer
Hi Trina,

First of all, the sperm need to get out of the vagina and into the uterus. If the sperm can't make that journey in a few hours, most will end up dead shortly thereafter. If fertile-quality cervical mucus is present, and if the sperm make make it to cervix and the womb, then sperm life-span can be extended. Fertile cervical mucus provides an effective means of improving the quantity and quality cervical mucus for precisely this purpose. On average, we can expect sperm to survive just a day or two, and given more optimum conditions, a handful of days more.
