Group B Strep (GBS) Positive in Previous Pregnancy: Antibiotics During Labor?

Question
Hi Dr.

I was tested GBS positive in my 1st pregnancy 2 years ago and was given antibiotics during labour.

Now I am expecting my 2nd one due in Dec 22. I was tested at 34 (Nov 11) weeks for GBS and the result was negative.

my questions are
1) my understanding is that GBS cannot be cured, and will come back anytime, so for safety purpose, should i have the antibiotics thr IV during labour?

2) My doctor said since it was negative, they would not give the antibiotics. But just for peace of mind, if I insist to have it, is it OK and cause any harm to my baby and myself.

thanks

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

You should be given the antibiotics during labor as this will help to prevent any infection if it was to suddenly reappear.

If you insist to have the antibiotics it will not cause harm to you or your baby as it will be a preventive measure. Even though you have tested negative, on the day you deliver it may have come back.
