Endometrial Ablation with Cervical Cerclage: What to Expect
QuestionAfter many tests to rule things out, and much research, my doctor and I have decided on endometrial ablation to hopefully help my irregular (constant) spotting/bleeding. The problem is, I have a cerclage (stitch) in my cervix from 10 years ago. The OB could not get it out. The knot was cut but there was too much tissue grown over it. My doctor is hoping to be able to dilate me enough to do this procedure. I am wondering, how much do I have to be dilated to get the instruments in? WIth the cerclage in place, it is a concern. I am not sure how tight they cinch those thigs. Also, is it much harder to do the procedure if I am on the 2nd day of my period during it? Thanks!

The Cervix is usually a bit dilated during menses and on the 2nd day, the procedure should become even easier not harder. Some Gyn, including myself, prefer to insert a tablet of misoprostol to make the cervix even softer and more dilatable before any procedure. The extent of dilatation depends on how modern is the hysterope your doctor is going to use. Modern instruments usually do not require dilatation more than Hegar 5 which is equivalent to 5 millimeters.
Good Luck
