Fetal Cord Twisting at 21 Weeks: What You Need to Know

Question
I am 21 weeks 4 days pregnant.  I had an ultrasound done today and the doctor said everything was fine although the cord was a little more twisted than normal.  Doctor says to repeat ultrasound in 8 weeks and check cord again.  Should I be concerned and is there anything I can do to correct this or prevent it from getting any more twisted?

Answer
Hi Michele,

congratulations on your pregnancy!

I doubt there is anything anyone can do about the twisting of the cord;  your doctor must think things are Ok as he is satisfied with another ultrasound in 8 weeks.  Babies can move and twist and turn and they even play with their own cord- unfortunately we dont have much control over this type of thing while they are in utero.

Just know that there is nothing that you did or could do to prevent the cord from twisting. It is not the way you are sleeping or walking or anything, it just happens.

I am sure things will be fine; it makes you nervous, I know, but I am sure you and your baby will be fine. As long as your doctor is aware and monitoring it, all you need to do is concentrate on having a healthy pregnancy, eating right, drinking lots of water.

good luck! :-)
