Understanding and Addressing Recurrent Miscarriage: A Guide

Question
QUESTION: hi. i m 30 yrs old.i m having 5 consective abortions during last 5 yrs.1st 40 days 2nd 20 weeks 3rd 24 weeks 4th 12 weeks and last 4 weeks.i had problem in my periods. they r not normal.my doc suggests that i m having cervical incomptence.they suggests me cercalage in next pregnancy.in all above cases i m having pain and bleeding. what should i do before getting pregnant again do help me

ANSWER: It certainly sounds like you may have an incompetent cervix. A cervical cerclage will certainly increase the likelihood of a successful pregnancy. The purpose of a cerclage is to prevent your cervix from opening early and provide extra support to assist in a successful pregnancy. It may also be the case that you have some underlying clotting disorder. I would advise you to speak to a high risk obstetrician and weigh your options carefully. Prometrium is a great medication to consider if you are a non smoker. This medication greatly assists in helping a pregnancy to progress successfully and helps strengthen the placenta which will, at interim, help you better increase your chances of carrying a baby to term. It may also not he a bad idea to consider blood thinners and moderate bed rest with your next pregnancy. If you are a smoker, most definitely stop, as this increases your risk of clotting and has far too many side effects. Smoking while on Prometrium increases your risk of clotting by more than double. I would also suggest a healthier lifestyle as well. This greatly affects your overall physical and mental health. I hope I have answered your questions. Should you have anymore concerns, please do not hesitate to ask. I wish you the best of luck. God bless.

Sincerely,
Cheryl Hetherington

QUESTION: dear doc what tests should i do to confirm that i m having clotting disorder. i m non smoker. when should i take prometrium. in pregnancy or in normal days.which type of blood thinners should i take.thanks

Answer
There are several tests your doctor can perform to see if you do have a clotting disorder. Many women without clotting abnormalities have issues with clotting during pregnancy. Prometrium can be taken at any time during pregnancy but is most likely to be prescribed mainly during the first trimester. There are various types of blood thinners that doctors prescribe during pregnancy. Each type better suits the type of clotting issue they are concerned with. Only your physician can tell you which would best suit you IF there is an actual clotting issue at hand.
