Rhesus Negative (Rh-) & Anti-D Injections During Pregnancy: What You Need to Know

Question
Both my husband & I are Rhesus negative blood types, therefore did not believe I needed to have and Anti-D injection during my pregnancy. I have had a recent bleed at 22weeks and the doctors told me I have to have an Anti-D injection as I am RH -ve. Do I need to have Anti-D? Won't my baby be RH -ve if both my husband and I are RH -ve?

Thank you

Answer
Toni,

Sorry it has taken so long for me to answer your question. I thought I answered this question last week but, when I logged into my account tonight, it was still there...As far as the need for your Rhogam shot goes, I don't understand either. If you and your husband are both Rh-, which is the same thing as being D-, then your baby should also be D-/Rh-. If you and the baby are both negative for it, then there shouldn't be any consequences for the baby. I'm not sure why you'd need the shot, unless it's hospital protocol. I think you should be sure to have your doctor explain to you exactly why you need it. When you find out, let me because I'm curious about the reasoning.
