Post-Miscarriage: Preventing Pregnancy While Night Nursing

Question
Hi.  I have a 19mo daughter who nurses 4-5 times per night.  I just had a
miscarriage  and was told I need to avoid pregnancy for a couple months.   I
conceived when my daughter was 17 months without having my period.  Can
you give me some advice on avoiding pregnancy?  I haven't charted for a
couple years and I am unsure how the night nursing will affect my cycle and
ability to chart temperatures....

Thank you,
Heather

Answer
It is more complicated to chart without periods and being awake several times during the night.  You will have to pay much closer attention to your mucus signs.  If you have not done that before, you should get a good NFP book or contact a teacher of the method to help you.  In the book I learned from there were pictures of the types of mucus you will observe and descriptions.

This website has a manual that I would recommend.  Because they teach "ecological breastfeeding" which it sounds like you are doing, they will have extensive information regarding the return of fertility after birth.

You should try to take your temperatures because the rise in temperature from ovulation may be more obvious that you expect in spite of the variations in your timing and also because if and when you do get pregnant again, you will know right away because of the temperature rise that just keeps on going beyond 14 days.

I hope this helps.  Brigid
