Understanding Hereditary Hemochromatosis DNA Testing: What to Expect

Question
My gastroenterologist has ordered the above test for me. I have all of the symtoms and profile that suggest hemochromatosis. Past 7 yrs liver profile has been "off" and as a result had 2 liver bx in past 3 yrs. Most recent showed too much iron. DNA test now ordered.  What all will test check?  Does it just show amount of iron? This test has not been suggested before.  Thank you. Margaret

Answer
Hi Margaret, I'd be happy to try and answer your question.  The hereditary hemochromatosis DNA test is the definitive test for hemochromatosis.  This test will tell your doctor if you have the disease.  It checks for the DNA (the gene) that causes the disease.  It won't show the amount of iron, your doctor probably  already tested for that to determine you may have hemochromatosis.  I would have the test done, it will tell you for sure.  I hope I've answered your question.  Take care!
