Post-Medical Abortion Recovery: What to Expect After Termination
QuestionIt's been almost two weeks since I had a medical abortion. I am a married mother of 4 and we thought this was the best choice of action for us. I was told that I was 6 weeks pregnant at the time I took the RU486 pill. 2 days later I was instructed to take 4 Cytotec pills by mouth. I'm still very emotional but I feel better physically. Today is the 12th day and I'm just barely spotting. I feel guilty for our decision, so it's hard for me to even call the doctor back to ask questions. My biggest fear is that I will have to undergo a surgical abortion now. My question is, before my follow up visit how can I know if the morning after pill was effective? I don't feel pregnant anymore and I bled a lot for the first week. I even had some clotting but shouldn't I notice something more? Doesn't the fetus still have to come out and what should I look for? I haven't noticed anything that resembled a fetus, is this normal? Thank you so much for your time and help during this horrible situation.
AnswerHi Holly,
If you bled a lot during the first week most likely the abortion was successful. However only an ultrasound will confirm if you have expelled the fetus or not. At only 6 weeks pregnant most women will not see the fetus because it is so small. Good luck!
