Selenium Supplements and TSH Levels: What You Need to Know

Question
Hi Samantha,
I have been hypothyroid for many years, currently taking Levoxyl. I've recently
added a Selenium supplement to my diet. Will this supplement throw off the
results of a TSH blood test?  Higher or lower? Thank you for your help in
advance.

Answer
Hi Diane.  I've only recently heard about this and there isn't much information out there.  But from what I understand, selenium CAN affect your TSH level (it will make it lower).  By how much is not clear.  When having your TSH checked, MAKE SURE your doctor knows that you are taking the selenium supplement so he/she can be aware if your test result comes out abnormal.
