Understanding Pre-Employment Medical Exams: What to Expect

Question
Hi Charles,
I did a medical checkup yesterday for one company, which includes blood test and urine test. I understand the tests will take about a week to process. I also did vision, hearing, ECG and some other general tests of which the results are immediately known.

The lab assistant took a syringeful of blood from me.

I like to know what will the clinic want to discover from the blood and urine tests?

Normally, employers will reject offer of employment based on what serious illnesses or diseases? HIV? Hepatitis? Diabetes? What others?

Thanks in advance
J. Crow

Answer
Hi Jonathan,
Employers can't legally reject someone with an illness for employment unless the illness directly impacts the job they will be doing. It's hard to say what the blood and urine tests were for (each company is different but probably to check for, among other things, blood sugar and a drug screen.
