Perimenopause & Infertility: Understanding Irregular Periods

Question
QUESTION: My period is misbehaving 1st month came 10 days early, next month came in 30 days instead of 28, next month came in 30 days again, this month it is 29 days already and no period last period was less than a day long. before this, the last few months my period would drag on for 10 days with on and off dark spotting after the official red flow had past. Many of my periods would stop short and then a day in a half later big clots would pass out. This pattern began before the brown water spotting episodes, and before the latest change of short one day periods and or late periods. before  all of theses changes I use to be every 21 to 28 days on point every month. I want another baby, do you think there is hope. Took pregnancy test at doctor(urine) came up negative, but I was also being treated for bloody UTI at the time. Do you think that affected the test. By the way I have a strange odor that i never had before that is not nice. Before, I was completely odor free in my special place. Do you think clomid is an option for me. I just finished a course of anti-fungal drugs both systemic and topical for a ringworm infection that consumed me. I got from one of my students at school.

ANSWER: Hello.  Can I ask your age?  It is difficult to tell the exact cause of your irregular periods.  It could be hormonal factors, or related to the infections that you had.  Depending on your age, Clomid might be something to try but you will need to discuss it with your gynecologist.  They should also do bloodwork to see what is going on with your hormones that could be causing your irregular periods.  The strange odor sounds like an infection that you should have checked out.  Good luck.

QUESTION: I am 43 years old, and  I do have a UTI presently.  Do you think that infection is causing the odor? The odor has no discharge. Thanks for your response. Does it sound like meno-pause. I hope not.

Answer
Hello.  The odor can sometimes be caused by a UTI, but usually the symptoms are painful urination, discolored urine, increased frequency, etc. Definately have the doctor do an exam to see what's causing it.  It could be a vaginal infection as well.  Sometimes women get vaginal infections from taking the antibiotics for a UTI because it kills the good bacteria in the vagina.  I don't think the symptoms necessarily mean menopause but it's hard to say.  Your doctor can tell you more.  Best of luck.
