QuestionI'm 40 years old and have taken Clomid per regular OB/GYN after tracking
temp Jan through April. OB also ran blood tests to be sure hormone
including thyroid is fine (I have Hashimoto Thyroid Disease since age 7 and
controlled). I seem to not ovulate regularly about once every 3 months. I have
a 5 1/2 year old daughter. After 3 months on Clomid this past month I was
late. At Infertility Consult doc took blood test. I was told I was pregnant with
a level of 3 and would retest in a few days and levels of hcg went to a
negative (which they said could happen being such a low hcg level). I am now
13 days late with no period. And doc assured me the blood test is accurate
and I'm not pregnant. Doc said to wait a week or two and call them if no
period. I'm concerned b/c I'm never late. I've read extensively about Clomid
and I don't have any symptoms of anything. I don't feel like I'm prego and I
don't feel any pms symptoms. I've been reading about enlarged ovaries, cycts
and wondered if I should call the doc and push about an appointment? Are
there symptoms with an enlarged ovary or cycst. This is new to me and a bit
stressful to say the least. Nobody I've talked to seems to have experienced
irregular periods with Clomid and then a sudden positive then negative blood
pregnancy test. Feeling flustered. Sorry to blab on and on but I'm concerned.
Thank you for your time.
AnswerDear Julie,
It's possible that you were pregnant, and the pregnancy did not continue to develop correctly, given that your HCG was positive and then decreased to a negative. However, a level of at least 5 is needed to be considered pregnant. That number should double every couple of days. Clomid usually doesn't lengthen the cycle that much. Symptoms of an enlarged ovary or cyst would be significant abdominal pain, bleeding, fever, etc. It could be that you had an early miscarriage and your body might take longer than usual to shed the lining. I would push for an appointment if nothing happens in another week. Good luck.
