Delayed Period After Depo Shot: What to Expect?

Question
Hey, I was on the Deppo shot for a little under a year, then my husband went to Iraq so I stopped taking it. The new shot was supposed to be in january, it is now april and I havent had a period at all, even though the last shot I took was in the beginning of november, so five months since I last had a shot... this is still in the realm of normal right? I shouldnt get worried unless I dont bleed for another 3 months, so 6 months from the shot I missed? I havent really bled since I started taking it over a year ago. Just making sure, cause I do want to get pregnant in the next couple years, and when hubby comes home I was planning to get back on the shot, so I guess I am wondering, should I bleed soon, how long is too long, and when I do want to get preggo, how early should I stop taking the shot? 6 months before we hope to get pregnant? a year? ahh!!

Answer
Hello,

You may want to check with your doctor to see if everything is ok, since you haven't had a period in five months.  Usually it takes just a few months for birth control to leave your system.  If you want to get pregnant, you should allow for at least 3 months after stopping the injection.  It could be longer for some people, and it looks like that might be the case with you since you haven't had a period in five months.  I would still check with your doctor just in case.
