Duphaston for Fertility: Effectiveness & Usage - Doctor Answer

Question
QUESTION: Hello doctor..i have been trying to get pregnant since last 3 months...but no success...i visited my Gynacecologist last month and she suggested me folic acid tablets and also Duphaston to be taken from the 14th day of my periods for 10 days which i had taken during my last cycle but still no success...my question is should I continue taking Duphaston in similar manner for this cycle as well

ANSWER: Hello Rizwana from India,

What you are using are fairly innocuous.  They are only supplements so there is no reason for you to not continue.  3 months is hardly enough time to worry about not being able to conceive.  It takes the average woman 8-12 months to achieve pregnancy so you have a long ways to go.  Don't worry about things and keep trying.

QUESTION: hello doctor..thanks for your answer however let me tell you that me and my husband we have sex twice a week and we don't follow the alternate days pattern like having sex on the 10th, 12th, 14th day and like wise...will this affect my chances of getting pregnant..or should we have sex on the 12th and the 14th day as those days are suppose to be more fertile...please your advice will be highly appreciated

ANSWER: Hello Again,

If you don't have sex frequently enough at the time of ovulation, then you can miss ovulation and will not get pregnant.  There is only a 12-hr window by which fertilization of the egg can occur.  It has also been shown that the sperm need to be in the tube preceding ovulation, otherwise pregnancy does not occur.  I would recommend the following calendar method that I use with my patients:

CD#1          Menstruation(flow) starts
CD#10          Stop recreational intercourse
CD#13-17        Have intercourse each day, once per day, and only one ejaculation per episode.
CD#18          Start progesterone supplementation and may resume recreational intercourse.

Good Luck,

QUESTION: Hello Doctor...thanks so much for your advice however i have a query my cycles are very irregular sometimes it is 25 days cycle sometimes 28 days and sometimes 30 days. In this state how will i know on which day i am ovulating and will this irregular cycle affect my chances of getting pregnant.

Answer
Hello Again,

If your cycles are irregular, then the calendar method I suggested won't work well.  The only options you would have is to try using a ovulation predictor kit to know when to attempt intercourse.  However, if you are that irregular, then you probably have an ovarian dysfunction and will need the assistance of fertility medications to get you regular.  You'll need to see a fertility specialist for that.
