Understanding Recurrent Miscarriage & Thyroid Issues | Expert Advice

Question
QUESTION: hello Doc,

I got pregnant after 3 months of my marriage. I never used pills..Im 30 and discovered hypothyroid [5-7 units of TSH] after my first loss in 45 days. I had a shot of methotextrate to abort it. There was no sac anywhere. I didnt try to conceive for 5months and didnt use pills too. Last month I missed my periods and took beta hcg on the 30th day and it was 500..Later during the night, i bled heavily and the hcg was back to 7 after 2 days. My doctor has advised to start trying again and she advised me to take Vitamin E/C.
I have two questions:
1)Is her advise on trying immediately after this miscarriage right?
2) How will these vitamins help me in sustaining the pregnancy?

Thanks a ton for your patience.
V T

ANSWER: Hello V from the U.S.,

1.  The time period does not make any difference unless you are trying for pregnancy at this time.  There is no reason to wait, however.
2.  The vitamins will not make any difference.  I would instead recommend that you take a prenatal vitamin if you are trying for pregnancy, and not take any others.

Miscarriage is fairly common in pregnancy and can occur in up to 40% of pregnancies.  Most patients/people will be successful if they continue to try.

QUESTION: hello Doc,
My LMP is Jan 16th. I tested for beta-hcg on Feb 16 and 18th. It was 167 and 422 units respectively. On hearing about my past miscarriages, my doc administered "fertigyn 5000" and asked me to take the following tablets:
  1) Dubagest -200
  2) Folic acid
  3) Ecosprin
  4) Becozinc.

My doc asked me to report in a month (Mar 16) for a scan.
What are the chances for a viable pregnancy for me this time? Should I take an early scan than March 16?

Thanks for your patience,
V T

Answer
Hello Again,

The medications that you took will probably not influence or impact your chances of having a miscarriage.  Fertigyn is HCG or human chornionic gonadotropin, manufactered in India.  The main purpose of this is to trigger ovulation.  It has not been shown to have any benefit in preventing miscarriage.  Dubagest 200 is another medication made in India.  It is progesterone.  It can help in some cases of miscarriage, but usually helps at the time of implantation and very early in the pregnancy.  Folic acid is a vitamin that is recommended in all pregnancies.  It has no impact with miscarriage.  Ecospirin is low dose aspirin.  This can help with miscarriages by reducing the chances of micro-clot formation and reduces the immune response.  Again, this should be taken from the beginning of the cycle.  Becozinc is just a zinc supplement.  It has no impact.

My recommendation would be to have the ultrasound done around the first week of March, rather than the second week.

I hope this helps,
