Miscarriage Risk: Is It Hereditary? Understanding Family History

Question
Hi, I wanted to ask are miscarriages hereditary? I'm 20 but in the future I would like a family but unsure whether I should are not. My nan had has miscarriages, my mother has had a miscarriage (before I was born) and also has my auntie. So would there be a risk for me to start a family in years to come?

Thanks, Emma xx

Answer
Hi Emma
There's no evidence to support the theory that miscarriage is hereditary. Miscarriage is usually the result of something not developing properly rather than an inherited genetic 'selection'.
There may be a hereditary medical condition or abnormality (I really don't like that word!) which might contribute to issues, but every individual is different & even the most unlikely women have successfully carried and given birth to healthy babies.

It's advised that all women see their doctor before trying for a baby. You can have a full check up and discuss ways to stay healthy & look after yourself for a healthy Mum & baby. Pregnancy is a risk to any woman, but we have excellent medical care and any potential problems are usually detected early and swiftly treated.
I am sorry to hear that losses run in the family, but please don't let this put you off trying for children in the future. You are the perfect example that women who do experience miscarriage can go on to have healthy children  :)

I hope this has helped and wish you all the best for the future.

Kindest Regards
Sarah
