QuestionI started having cramps about a month ago. I went to get a check up and the doctor informed me that I have a cyst which is approximately 7 cm in diameter, and it's been bleeding. I have been informed that I have to do a surgery to remove it. My question is what are the risks that involve when the cyst is bleeding and how immediate do I have to get into surgery?
AnswerHello Thamina from UAE,
If in fact the cyst was bleeding, the surgery needs to be done now/today. So, based on that fact, I don't think that the cyst is bleeding. It is possible you have a "hemorrhagic" cyst which means that there is blood within the cyst, but it is not actively bleeding. In that case, the surgery can be planned, or you can wait and see if it resolves on its own. A 7 cm cyst is very large. What I would do is put you on the birth control pill for one month then rescan. If the cyst is still present and has not changed or increased in size, then I would schedule a laparoscopy to remove the cyst within two weeks. If the cyst is reduced in size, I would continue the treatment and follow. If it is gone, nothing further needs to be done.
