Understanding Abnormal Pap Tests & HPV: What to Expect

Question
Hi, i was just wondering what i should do. I'm 20, and i had an abnormal pap in september, and had a colposcopy, and then had a repap a couple weeks ago, and it came back abnormal and now i have to have another colpsocopy. i do have HPV and i was just wondering if this will keep happening every six months, or if this will eventually clear up so i can have some normal paps. should i get a specialist to treat me? i have my paps done by a family practitioner and the colposcopy person is referred. anyway, anything will help.

Answer
Dear Kelly,  To answer the question about getting a specialist, I say you need to see an ob/gyn at your are and NOT a family practitioner especially since you have HPV and now have abnormal pap smear readings...  An ob/gyn is more educated in this field and also in the field of possible cervical cancers....  You are at higher risk for developement of cervical cancer because of you HPV and you need the expert ob/gyn to help you....

As for will this eventually clear up, maybe and maybe not...  Some women's bodies can fight this virus and it will heal on it's own, but other require treatment and even though there are no guarantees of anything that will clear this up, you have a better chance with an ob/gyn taking over your pap smears and and HPV treatment than a family doctor....  Make an appointment with an OB/GYN and have him/her do your colposcopy and only use your family doctor for colds, flu, etc from now on.....

thank you,   karen
