Understanding High LFT Results & Liver Health: Alcohol vs. Fatty Foods

Question
Dear Swissdoc, I have had high lft counts for the past 4 yrs. My primary doctor sent me to a specialist for consultation. He gave me a complete physical exam and spent quite some time going over my charts for the past several years.I have had ultrasound of my liver, which showed Fatty liver. The specialist advised me to loose weight, cut out fat foods and quit alcohol.Wants to see me in six months for new lft test.
My questions are, which is worse, alcohol or fatty foods.I have quit the alcohol But find it very difficult to loose the needed weight. Can thin people develop fatty liver even if they dont drink. He may want to do a liver biopsy if my count is still high.I am fearful of a needle being stuck in liver. Is there any other tests other than the biopsy that can determine the healthy state of my liver.Such as an MRI,ebt scan or various blood test.I just hate the thought of a needle through my belly into the liver. Finally, should I be concerned about the lft results or is this normal for fatty liver and obese people.
Any advise, suggestions would be appreciated."Thanks" for offering your valuable time to this web site. You are appreciated.

Answer
dear ron:
since you are not thin the question is moot. kindly follow the advise your specialist gave you - he/she sounds very competent. and no, there is no test able to replace the liver biopsy. for further information consult my nash page at http://www.ikp.unibe.ch/lab2/NASH.html
