Cat Accidentally Bites Another Cat: Understanding the Situation

Question
I was cleaning some cupboards this morning and had a ladder out.   I have had my cats since they were kittens and they never never go outside.  Well one of them was on the top step of the ladder when I got down to get something.  I believe she leaped down...misjudged herself and landed on another cat that was sleeping at the foot of the ladder.  Hissing and growling ensued.  I never hear that.  I believe that the cat sleeping was startled.  I put the cat that leaped down in one room and lifted the cat that was sleeping up to put him in another room.  With no warning whatsoever he bit me...he was declawed when he was younger.  I put peroxide on the bite immediately and applied an antiseptic and bandage.  Is this all that I should have done?

Answer
Yes, that is the initial appropriate treatment, but, cat bites almost always get infected, and they are puncture wounds, meaning the bacteria get injected deeply into the tissue, so topical treatment with cleansing won't get down deep enough.  You will most likely need to be on oral antibiotics for a while... so call your doctor to let them check it out.

Hope this helps....
