Understanding Post-Surgery Complications After Perforated Intestine

Question
My brother had surgery six weeks ago for a perforated intestine.  He has had three abcesses since surgery and three different drainage tubes which have all been removed.   He continues to run fever (around 101) off and on, have chills and nausea and vomitting.   He has had three CT Scans in the last week which have not shown any additional abcesses and his white blood count is at "3"; what could be going on?   I would appreciate any honest answer.

Answer
Hi Randy,
This could be a lot of things. It could be small abscesses that can't easily be seen by CT; chronic atelectasis (small areas of collapse) in the lungs which can cause fever; Even possibly deep vein thrombosis from the stress and immobility caused by prolonged inactivity.
It is hard to know exactly without seeing him in person. My guesses are just that. He obviously needs close follow up to see that this doesn't get worse.
