QuestionHello,
Can you tell me the signs of low thyroid and what the normal levels are in a 17 year old girl? My daughter is extremly moody, low activity, quit a bit of hair loss where you can see the scalp, constipation is something she deals wiht as well. I have read alot of these can be a part of thyroid trouble. Can you tell me what tests we should look at to see what is causing the symptoms. If she is on the low side of the thyroid numbers can it be safe to try some medications and see if her symptoms improve. It is very disconcerning to see her loose so much hair where it is mostly her scalp now showing. Thank you for your time.
AnswerLow thyroid usually gives brittle hair loss and constipation with low activity. Nutrient deficiency can also do this with depression.
The TSH and Free T4 with TPO are the complete tests and their results will include the normals for her age and the lab doing them so these normals will be on the test results which you should ask for an actual copy of.
