Persistent Phlegm: Causes, Potential Allergies & Cystic Fibrosis Concerns

Question
Hi Charles:

My name is Roberto and I'm 29 years old.

I have suffered from phlegm in my throat since long time ago. Everytime I swallow either food, water or just saliva I feel that I also swallow phlegm. I don't have neither sore troat nor pain tough, just the sensation.

Do you think that this could be some kind of allergy?

Also, could this be related somehow with cystic fibrosis. One of the physicians ordered me a sweat test witn results of NaCl 60 mmol/l.

Your help is greatly appreciated,
Roberto

Answer
Hi Roberto,
If this IS cystic Fibrosis, then yes, excess phlegm production is a problem. It is a little late in life to have that diagnosis though. A NaCl of 60 Mmol is not diagnostic of CF.
You may just have an over production of saliva and mucus that causes these symptoms.
