Safe Antidepressant Weaning: Questions & Concerns

Question
Hi there.
Ihave a question regarding weaning off my antidepressants. I have been taking Remeron (Zispin) 30mg  for 2 years now, and i have started to wean myself  off.I started in June 2004 by missing One tablet every 2 months. I seem to have coped well, It is now December and i only take 3 a week now. Is it possible that i could stop completely now, as the nights i take the tablet make me feel worst then when i'm not taking them. Or is it okay to cut back to missing one every month instead of one every 2 months?
Thank you for your help
Kind regards
Jane

Answer
First of all, you should be doing this with the blessing of your treating physician.  But, for example, if my patient and I decide that it is worthwhile stopping an antidepressant, we will wean it fairly quickly over about a 1 month period.  Remeron does not have to be weaned slowly, as there is really no "withdrawal" syndrome associated with it, like the Serotonin drugs have, like Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Paxil, Celexa and some others.... the withdrawal symptoms are not dangerous, just uncomfortable.

Hope this helps....
