QuestionThis may not be your area, but as i am finding, little or no information seems to exist with respect to this issue, any advice would be most welcome.
my 13 month old son was given the mmr vaccination 2 weeks ago, within 3 days of the injection he was diagnosed as having chicken pox, now after 2 weeks he is particularily unwell (We have seen a Doctor) and although we are advised that from what his symptoms are, everything is as would be expected ie A measles rash and a rubella rash, plus the ongoing chicken pox, we are told basically to keep an eye on him and bring him back to the hospital, should he deteriorate.
My concern and worry is that we were advised that he should be as well as possible before administering the MMR, ie he was turned away first time from the vaccination due to a cold, being told that his immune system needs to be able to combat the vaccination and it is recommended that any prevailing ailment should be overcome before administration of the vaccine.
Obviously he overcame his cold, only now to find that he has been given the vaccination whilst battling the chicken pox virus.
My question/concern/worry is, is my son likely to face any long term issues through an overloading of ailments at one given time? Can his immune system cope? are there any known instances of such an occurance and what was the result?
I am sure that i am merely a paranoid parent, but i would welcome any advice or information if at all possible.
Many thanks for your time.
Kind Regards
Mr B.Russell
AnswerFirst, I don't believe he has all those illnesses simultaneously. He just has the chicken pox and possibly a reaction to the MMR. He will get over the chicken pox, then have lifelong immunity and also will have the immunity from the MMR. It is theoretical to hold an immunization while a child is ill... we don't know for sure that it doesn't work as well when someone is sick w/ another illness. He will be OK in a week or two.
