Finger Cut After Gourd Crafting: Potential Tetanus Risk?

Question
An hour or so ago I cut my finger on a carving tool that I use for making gourd crafts. The tool is relativly new and had been kept in a box of mine and the gourd had been cleaned with a bleach solution. The gourd slipped and the knife which actually has a pretty dull edge and is of a rectangular shape with only about a half of an inch square blade on the end, more or less, jabbed into my pointer finger on the outside area. The cut itself is not wide and stopped bleeding after I applied pressure. Its visually obvious to me that I do not need stiches but I still think, (because of the force behind the "slipp") that it may have went pretty far. My finger moves fine and now the only thing that worries me is my own paranoia about a tetnus infection! I dont really remember the last time I had one. I'm 23 now and have only been under medical care on two occasions since then. Once , seven years ago when I was in a car wrecked that involved some cuts ( I pretty sure they would have given me one then.?) and when I gave birth to my daughter in 2003,( I seem to remember reading something about pregnant women getting them?). Its late in the afternoon and my local hospital has closed the department that gives that information, so Ill have to wait untill morning. I would normally not worry but after reading up on all the horrible symptoms, my imagination is getting away with me. So , my basic question is ,...at the very latest would I be o.k. to wait untill tomorrow to get a tetnus shot. How long does the infection take to set in?..Did I mention I was uninsured and would rather not go to emergency just because I was all worked up? Thank you so very much!

Answer: you need to check to be sure it was given, if you have no record, you did not get one.

when I gave birth to my daughter in 2003,( I seem to remember reading something about pregnant women getting them?).
Answer: Sorry, but they are not given to pregnant women as a routine, so if you have no record of it being given then it was not given.

Answer: Yes, you can wait safely for tomorrow. It takes a few day to a week for the tetanus to become a problem if you have a normal immune system.

go to www.nih.gov and search for tetanus
