Persistent Knee Pain: Causes, Symptoms & When to See a Doctor

Question
Hello;

I've had slight discomfort in my left knee off and on for a few years. I was told it was simply 'growing pains' and that it should disapear. I'm 21 now, and for the past week my knee has been causing me pain. It's not a sharp pain, but it is fairly constant. When I bend my knee, it feels tight, and the pain increases if the knee is kept bent for too long. It's also a bit unstable and will collapse every once in awhile. There's no swelling and no obvious deformities, and there was no acute injury. I have an appointment with my doctor in about a week, I was just wondering if you could give me an idea of what to expect. I've been in before, but they've never done an MRI or anything, should I try and insist on having one?

thanks very much. :)

Answer
Hi Charlotte,
You may have Chondromalacia Patella (C.P.). It is a common problem for women due to the anatomy of your hips and legs. If this is what it proves to be, exercises and aspirin are the best treatment. Rarely is surgery necessary. A decision about an MRI will come after the exam. If it is C.P., then an MRI will be of little value.
