Head Lump in Child: Causes, Symptoms & When to Worry

Question
Doctor,

I have a 10 year old boy that woke up this morning and said he has a lump on his right side of his skull.  Nothing on the other side.  It is tender when you push directly on it, otherwise it does not hurt.  No reddness or any odd look to it.  We took him to the Doctor and he said that he thinks it simply is part of the bone or skull and sometimes the head is not perfectly symmetrical.  Or it could be a small lump due to the hair glands etc that is not infected at this time, so no need for antibiotics.  I am concerned about sarcoma's and cancer........Can you elaborate on my concerns and your thoughts?  It bascially feels like bone, hard, not moveable, yet prominent but as the Doctor said, he feels it to be normal but bigger than the other side

Answer
the nice thing is that your conerns are so rare that it is very unlikely... I would follow it and if it gets bigger or painful, then that would force your doctor's hand, but overall, it is very unlikely to be anything bad.  I wouldn't treat it with antib either unless there were fever, redness, etc....
