Delayed Femur Fracture Healing in Children: Understanding the Situation
QuestionMy 5 year old son suffered a femur fracture (closed) in a bicycle accident 4 weeks ago. He was immediately placed in a spica cast which is supposed to come off in 2 weeks. We were told yesterday that the bone looks only "ok", and that instead of being out of a cast in 2 weeks, he will be moved to a long leg cast for an additional 2 weeks. Our orthopedist set the bone so that it overlaps to account for faster growth, but the x-ray now shows the bone at a serious angle. There are no nails, pins or plates, and we are concerned about his leg not healing properly. Should we seek a second opinion, or should we simply stay on our course of action? Any input you can provide would be appreciated.
AnswerThere are certain rules that if the bone is at a certain angle, there is no need to straighten or operate... those angles sometimes are 20-30 degrees. However, kids heel differently from adults and if it were my child, I would make sure I was seeing a pediatric (child) orthopedist. He may say the same thing, but they are a little more used to working with kids and bones that have not attained full growth yet. Hope this helps....
