QuestionHi,
My eye dr. believes I have Hollenhorst Plaque. I did go to my family dr. who is going to run a bunch of tests.
My question is, how serious is this? I am male 34 years old, exercise, no diabetes, good pressure, good cholesterol (as of 1 year ago), good ratios, LDL, HDL, no family history of heart disease, etc. I eat very healthy, don't smoke or drink. Is this something I should be concerned with. My physician made it sound like it is common, but when I research it seems like it is found in the elderly. Could it be nothing? Thanks so much.
AnswerHi Clint,
These findings could represent carotid artery or great vessel cholesterol plaque formation, pieces of which can break off and wind up in the small arteries of the retina. Further work-up is needed to assess these arteries for cholesterol plaque formation.
