Cortisone Injections & Weight Loss After Gastric Bypass: What to Expect

Question
I had gastric bypass a month ago.  I lost 24# the first 3 weeks. Last week I had 4lumbar facet injections in my back with cortisone I think they said Medrol.  I have not lost any weight since the injections.  Would that be because of the cortisone injections??

Answer
Dear Sue,

I was not able to find any information regarding Medrol causing weight gain, or cessation of weight loss, in gastric bypass patients.  Congratulations on a successful surgery!

However, Medrol will cause increased appetite, and retention of sodium, thus retaining fluids.  Are you having problems with either of these?

If you find you are still not losing, please call your surgeon and explain the situation to him.  I am betting you will start losing again very soon.

Best wishes to a new you!

Andrea
