Understanding Levels of Senior Care: A Guide for Families

Question
My mom was living in an assisted living residence taking care of herself and getting around in electric wheelchair. She was in hospital recently(she is 84 and had gall bladder removed and broken foot..many, many health problems daily) and now in a rehab facility which I think she will be needing more care.........what are the next steps of care when one cannot get around on her own?

Answer
Hi Iris and thanks for writing,

Although the names and exact qualifications for each level may vary state to state, the basic levels are:

Personal or Independent Care (can do all of own care)

Assisted Living (two meals provided daily and minimal assistance with care and/or medications)

Intermediate Care (needs moderate assistance with care)

Intermediate Care - Secure unit (needs moderate assistance with care in a locked unit for safety reasons - usually for those with advanced Dementia at risk for wandering)

Total or Extended Care (needs total assistance with care and/or can not walk more than ten feet without assistance).

I hope this helps answer your questions. You should speak to your local health authority to learn more about assessments and care options in your area.

All my best,

Margot
