Alzheimer's Care Alternatives: Options Beyond Nursing Homes

Question
My mother-in-law has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's for the past year. She has been unable to care for herself so we have paid for 24 hour care for her. Her funds for this care have been exhausted, and we are not ready to place her in a nursing home. Are there no other options for us?

Answer
Hi Patricia and thanks for writing,

The best advice I can give is to contact a Social Worker at your local hospital and the Alzheimer Society. Funded services are different city to city, and state to state so I can't be specific about what may be available for your Mother-in-law.

Generally most state and city governments do provide some funded home support services and adult daycare services which are worth looking into. Usually they will come and assess the client's medical needs and financial status and offer services based on that assessment.

You also want to ensure you've checked all insurance options. Look through their papers and see if they have any insurance benefits; often people have them and aren't even aware of them. If her husband worked for a large company/corporation, or was in the amred services, they may have some insurance for nursing services.

These are the usual options and I hope you have luck finding services for your MIL in your area.

Wishing you all the best,

Margot
