Healthcare Assistance for the Uninsured: Resources & Support

Question
I know of at least one person who is unemployed and
uninsured.  And with money being a scarce comodity,
proper health care is the last thing on the list
since there is no money for doctors and such, but
only for food and bills.  I keep thinking there should be
something out there somewhere to help people in this position, who are hurting, but not
having the available funds to seek needed care.

Can you tell me if and where some such help might be
available?  If there is anything, I would like to be
able to pass it on.

Thanks!
Gary Jones

Answer
Hi Gary,
Unfortunately this sort of situation is becoming the norm rather than the exception. Each State/Country in the USA has some help for indigent folks. You didn't mention age, but Medicare is an automatic for 65 and older. Younger folks can get assistance from Medicaid. In an emergency situation this person can go to a city or county hospital and be treated even without proof of insurance. It is illegal in the USA to refuse care to anyone who presents to an ER with an illness.
Of course, s/he will have to arrange to pay the hospital and most places will work with patients. There are even some doctors that will do occasional pro bono medical care in special situations or at least work out a payment plan for treatment. The system isn't perfect and getting worse all the time.
