Persistent High Fevers in Toddlers: Causes, Risks & Treatment
QuestionMy son is 2 1/2 years old, He is a previous 23 weeker, with that note many complications but has been doing ok until about January of this year. He started having 102-103 and sometimes higher fevers. They treat him with antiobtics and they go away for a few days then we start all over. He had a febrile seizer late Jan. with a temp. reaching 105.5 degrees. treated for infection and then went home. He still spikes 103-104 fevers and is in the hosp. now because of them he's been on antabotics for a week now and still has fever all blood work and urine have come back neg. They checked His MRI because he dose have brain damage, so they though maybe it was his brain not being able to moderate his premature, but that part is not affected. So were back to square one I was wondering if you had any thoughts on what it might be, or what they need to check for if you could help it would be greatly appreciated, any suggestions would help me.
Answerthese are always complicated.... fevers without a definite cause have many possibilities.... one being that the part of the brain that regulates temperature had been damaged or that he has recurrent localized lung infections from probable scarring due to prematurity. I would have your doc refer to a ped specialist for eval. Hope this helps....
