QuestionHi.. I am due with my second child at the end of June. I know that Vitamin K injections are routinely given at birth, at least here in the U.S. I have been doing some research on the ingredients of these injections and found that they include things such as benzyl alcohol, phenol, propylene gylcol, etc. I have also read that this injection could be associated with childhood leukemia. I am interested in giving oral Vitamin K Drops and have had some recommended to me. Here is what they contain:
K-Quinone-is an oil soluble source of vitamin K-1 (phytonadione), the non-toxic natural form of vitamin K present in plants.
K-Quinoe is extracted from alfalfa, nettles and green tea. It is now in a base for Olive Extract and Soy Extract..
I would like to know if this would be a safe alternative to the Vitamin K injection. I am usually pretty cautious about herbal treatments..
I dont think that hospitals usually offer the option of oral Vitamin K, so from what Ive heard it sounds like I would have to purchase them on my own to bring with me..
I just wanted to get some opinions on using the oral vitamin K. I really appreciate your help!
Jennifer
Answerthere is no evidence that the trace amounts of preservatives in the Vit K cause any problems... this has been tracked long term. Oral Vit K can be obtained thru green veg and supplements but it is difficult to get enough in an infant at birth, so the injection is given, and is safe...... hope this helps....
