Epidural Injections for Sciatica: Are They Worth It?

Question
Hi Dr. Aukerman,

I have a herniated lumbar disc, L4-5. I had surgery (laminectomy) in 2003 after trying 2 epidurals that didn't work. The disc reherniated after 3 years of no pain. Before considering surgery again, we decided to try epidurals again. I had one last Monday and, so far, the sciatica hasn't improved. In your opinion, is it a waste of time to get another epidural? My thinking is if they didn't work 3 years ago, why would they work now. I hate to inject drugs into my body if they aren't effective. I'd rather just proceed with the surgery, which I know will work. The first time, the surgeon only shaved 18% of the disc material. I still have lots left. I need an objective opinion-thanks.

You are correct they are not good for the body except to buy time for surgery or good nutrition such as:

3000 mg of omega-3 fish oil 4 times a day
250 mg magnesium oxide before each meal, 500mg at bedtime
Calcium carbonate  with Vit D before dinner and at bedtime

Of course, only if OK with your doctors.
