Loss of Smell: Causes, Symptoms & When to See a Doctor

Question
Hi, I've been having this problem, and no matter what I try, nothing helps.  For the past two years now, I have been unable to smell most everything; the only exceptions are certain air fresheners, and even those are hard to smell now. For example, I stood over a cooking pot of my favorite dish, and could not smell anything. At first, I thought that it was a sinus problem, so I had tried taking medicine since this started around a time that I had a very bad cold and when my asthma first started. However, that did nothing to help.  Then I talked to my family, and they suggested things, but they didn't help either.  Except for the asthma, I've been relatively healthy, though I seem more prone to colds now than I have ever been before.  Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Answer
There are a couple of things.... you may have a low grade chronic sinus infection.... see a doctor for a course of antibiotics plus oral steroids..... plus afrin twice a day for 5 days.

In the meantime, get some over the counter zinc supplement in the vitamin section and try that for a month.... don't overdose, just one daily.

I hope this helps
