Medical Mysteries: Fact vs. Fiction - Eyes & Brain After Death

"I've got two questions: In TV and the movies, I always see a nurse or doctor pressing closed the open eyes of the deceased to close them after death; is this real or a Hollywood invention? I've often also heard that the briain continues functioning long after the heart has stopped, is this true?"

Answer
the brain functions for a couple of seconds after the heart has stopped.... it requires a lot of oxygen for metabolism and goes out quickly.... Sometimes eyes are left open when someone dies, so closing them is reasonable.... but they aren't seeing anything.
