Fainting Episodes: Causes, Symptoms & When to See a Doctor

Question
Dear doctor, about 2 weeks ago I experienced symptoms similar to fainting, but did lose consciousness: broke out in a sweat, weak & unable to stand/fell to the ground, vision blurred, hearing muffled, nausea (lasted approx. 5-10 minutes). I have felt fine since.  Do you feel a dr. appointment is needed, as I feel fine now?  I have a history of eating disorders, and am certain this was the cause.

Answer
Marie,

It is always a very good idea to follow up with your PCP (MD) after some episode such as that.  What you have described in your narrative is called "syncope" and there are many reasons for why this may have happened.  It could be hypoglycemia or something even more ominous (dysrrhythmia).  Especially if you have an eating disorder all the more reason to follow up with your doctor.
