QuestionWhen I gave birth to my 1st child 15 months ago I separated my pubic bone. I
was not able to walk for a couple of weeks and was in alot of pain. I just found
out I am pregnant with my 2nd child and was wondering what is the
reoccurrence of this happening again and if I will need a c-section?
AnswerThe condition you describe is generally known as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction, or SPD. Although painful, this condition does not mean you will need a c-section. You do need to be careful this time, though, in order not to aggravate it. You can find a lot of helpful information on this website:

I have dealt with this condition myself, and had a wonderful VBAC experience in spite of it. I highly recommend seeing a chiropractor regularly, especially during the end of your pregnancy when you are most likely to feel a recurrence of pain. Pay attention to your posture and positioning. Keep your hips aligned and balanced at all times; do not try and stand on one leg, even just to get in the car or put on your pants.
When your next birth comes, do not try to give birth while in bed. Lying on your back, or semi-reclined, with your legs pulled back, is the worst possible position for you, as this will put the most stress on your pubic joint. Your best position will be on your hands and knees, or on your knees leaning over a support (such as a squatting bar, the edge of the bed, the side of a birthing pool, etc.). You want to focus on keeping your knees as close together as possible during the pushing stage. This will help protect the pubic joint from further separation and damage.
Good luck, and congratulations on your new pregnancy!
