Postpartum Bleeding: Understanding and Managing Lochia

Question
How common is passing clots after childbirth?

Answer
It is very normal to pass clots after birth.  Normal clots can range from the size of a grape up to the size of a golf ball, and passing clots can continue for up to two weeks.  If you pass any clots larger than a golf ball, or if you continue to pass clots after two weeks, you should contact your health care provider.
