Placenta Embedding in C-Section Scar: Risks & Pregnancy Concerns
Questioni am 26 weeks pregnant and i had a recent ultra sound. They said it looks like my placenta is embedding into prior scar from c section i had 3yrs ago. I am already high risk taking lovenox 2times a day for blood clotting issue with this pregnacy and i have had pre eclampsia and a placental abruption with last pregnany. How much of a risk is this for me and the baby? they said i may have to have my uterous removed instead of just taking out the placenta to control heavy bleeding and that's fine. I'm just scared. Can myself or the baby die from this? what does all of this mean?
AnswerThe biggest risk with placentas embedding into the cesarean scar is a retained placenta, which is when the placenta will not detach normally from the uterus. The complication involved with this is postpartum hemorrhage (excessive bleeding). I believe this is why they've recommended a hysterectomy for you because this will keep the placenta from tearing apart your uterus and causing lots of bleeding.
The best thing you can do is relax and take things easy. It seems your doctors are concerned the most about your placenta not detaching properly after your child is born and a hysterectomy will help prevent this. Your doctors will continue to monitor you carefully and will take action if they feel your health or the baby's is compromised. =) Be aware of your body and the signs its giving you, but please don't be scared. Your body will try to do everything it can to nourish and give you a healthy baby. =)
Please let me know if you'd like more information or if I can help you with anything else. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
Best wishes,
Helen =)
