Pregnancy During Dialysis: Can It Happen?

Question
I haven't had my period in many months (three or four, I've lost track). I've taken several pregnancy tests and they have all been negative though my kidneys do not work (I make a very, very small amount of urine each day). I'm on dialysis currently and I don't even know if it is possible for me to carry a baby to term. Is it possible that I could still be pregnant and it's not showing up on the tests because my kidneys don't work?

Answer
If you're taking urine-based home tests, these may be inaccurate due to a sufficient amount of urine. Blood tests through your doctor, however, would accurately indicate hCG levels and whether or not they are rising. hCG is produced by the developing embryo so the kidneys would not play a role.  A lack of period can also signify an infection so I would recommend you make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes!
Helen =)
